In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, flipping the seat in the 2024 House race. This was the final race to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress starts. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat shortly before The A.P. announced the result, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced that he had won before the deadline for counties in California to officially confirm their results, which was two days away.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations.
Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte narrowly won this House race by a small margin.
