A Democratic candidate who previously served in the state legislature won against the Republican currently holding the seat in California’s Central Valley. This victory marked the final House race from the 2024 election to be officially declared, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. declared the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Mr. Gray announced that he had won before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.

According to Mr. Gray’s statement on X, the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is transparent and responsible.

Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, reversing the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in another House race.
