On Tuesday, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley, flipping a seat that was the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, won against the current U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress starts. The Republicans will have 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to his campaign spokesman, Duane Dichiara.
Mr. Gray announced that he had won on Tuesday, which was two days ahead of the deadline for California counties to finalize their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics.
Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District in 2022, overturning the results from two years ago when Mr. Duarte won by a very slim margin, making it one of the closest races in the House.
