On Tuesday, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative to take control of a seat in California’s Central Valley. This victory marked the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, won against the current U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the Associated Press officially announced the results, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 total votes, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Mr. Gray announced that he had won on Tuesday, which was two days ahead of the deadline for California counties to finalize their results.

In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over political biases.

Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, which was a turnaround from the results in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in any House race.
