In California’s Central Valley, a Democrat who used to be a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, resulting in a change of seat. This was the final House race of 2024 to be officially declared by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives with 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats when the next Congress meets.

Mr. Duarte conceded the contest when he was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign, shortly before The Associated Press made the official call.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.

In a statement made on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship and is committed to being transparent and accountable.

Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that was a turnaround from the 2022 election results. Two years prior, Mr. Duarte had won by a narrow margin in what was one of the closest House races.
