In California’s Central Valley, a Democrat who used to be a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in the last House race of 2024, as reported by The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots cast, accepted defeat just before The A.P. announced the results, according to statements from Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for his campaign.
Mr. Gray announced that he had won before the deadline for California counties to finalize their results on Tuesday.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the well-being of the people in the Valley over political partisanship.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, achieved a victory in the 13th Congressional District that overturned the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very slim margin, making it one of the closest House race outcomes.
