A former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican officeholder on Tuesday to gain control of a seat in California’s Central Valley. This race was the final House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before the call from The A.P., Mr. Duarte’s campaign spokesman, Duane Dichiara, announced that Mr. Duarte had conceded the election, as he was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced that he had won before the deadline for California counties to confirm their election results, which was two days away.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray declared that the final results indicate that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics and is committed to accountability and independence.
Mr. Gray, who used to be part of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very narrow margin in what was one of the closest House races.
