On Tuesday, a Democratic candidate who used to be a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in a change of party for the seat in the House of Representatives, making it the final race from 2024 to be officially decided, as reported

Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, compared to the Democrats’ 215.

Before the Associated Press declared the winner, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 total votes, acknowledged defeat. This information came from a spokesperson for the campaign named Duane Dichiara.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced that he had won, two days before California counties had to officially confirm their election results.

In a statement released on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results indicate that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations.

Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, achieved victory in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results of the 2022 election. Two years prior, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin in that House race.
