In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, flipping the seat in the last House race of 2024 to be declared, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the new Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats while the Democrats will have 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a competition with over 210,000 total votes, admitted defeat just before The A.P. announced the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations. The final results of the election support this idea.

Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, achieved victory in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin, one of the smallest in any House race.
