In California’s Central Valley, a Democratic former state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent on Tuesday, flipping a seat in the 2024 House race that was the last to be decided. This information comes from The Associated Press.
Even though challenger Adam Gray defeated incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before the Associated Press declared the winner, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their election results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days early.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results show that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan interests and is both independent and accountable.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, won the recent election in the 13th Congressional District, which was a change from the results in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won in that district by a very small margin, making it one of the closest House race victories.
