In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent on Tuesday, flipping a seat in the House that was the final race to be called for the 2024 election. This information was reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives with 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats.
Before the Associated Press officially declared the outcome of the election, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat. This information was confirmed by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.
In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed confidence in the district’s readiness for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations. He emphasized the importance of independent and accountable leadership in serving the community.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in comparison to other House races.
