In California’s Central Valley, a Democratic candidate who previously served as a state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent in the last House race of 2024 to be decided. This information was reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 ballots cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. declared the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, which was two days before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.

Mr. Gray stated in a statement on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics, and is independent and accountable.

Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, which was a turnaround from the election results in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in comparison to other House races.
