Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated on Wednesday morning that her son had undergone changes since 2018. She had previously sent an email alleging that he mistreated women regularly and lacked integrity and moral character.
During an interview on "Fox & Friends," Mrs. Hegseth described Pete as a transformed individual who has been forgiven and redeemed. She emphasized that he is a changed person.
"I really hope that people, especially our female senators, will take the time to understand who Pete is today. I ask that you listen to him with an open heart and recognize the truth of who Pete is. It is important to note that he does not mistreat women."
The woman’s statement came out after The New York Times released an email she had sent while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce with his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she explained that she did not stand by what she had said in that email and had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following recent allegations of alcohol abuse and mismanagement of nonprofit organizations reported in The New Yorker, Mr. Hegseth is facing additional scrutiny. A woman accused him of rape at a political conference in 2017, but no charges were filed after an investigation. Mr. Hegseth’s lawyer stated that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences of Mr. Hegseth’s actions have put his potential leadership position in the Defense Department under threat for the upcoming Trump administration. President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering different candidates for the role instead.
