After Tennessee prohibited gender-transition care for children, some families decided to leave immediately, leaving their homes and schools. Others opted to stay, making sacrifices like reducing vacation and holiday spending in order to travel out of state for their children’s medical appointments.

There are people who have chosen to remain in Tennessee for now, but they are not completely dismissing the idea of moving away from the state in the future

Families are feeling extremely anxious as the Supreme Court reviews a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are worried that if the ban is upheld, it could lead to even more difficulties in caring for their children, especially with the Trump administration promising to impose restrictions on transgender individuals.

Kristen Chapman, who relocated from Tennessee with her teenage daughter following the passing of a law, shared that adjusting to a situation where there are no ideal choices can feel like being in a constant state of upheaval. It can be likened to experiencing a personal crisis that alters one’s sense of self and comfort.

Five families’ parents and three children agreed to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation and ongoing harassment.
