Tennessee’s ban on certain medical treatments for transgender youth is causing families to make difficult decisions. The Supreme Court is set to hear a legal challenge to this ban on Wednesday.

The ban has had a significant impact on young people who are transgender, causing their typical experiences during adolescence to be disrupted. The focus is on the fact that these individuals are also transgender. Photo credit: Lucy Garrett for The New York Times.

Some families left quickly after Tennessee passed a law banning gender-transition care for children, leaving their homes and withdrawing their children from school. Other families decided to stay, adjusting their budgets to afford trips out of state for necessary medical appointments.

Some people who have chosen to remain in Tennessee have not completely dismissed the idea of leaving the state at some point in the future.

Families are feeling very anxious as the Supreme Court reviews a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are concerned that if the ban is upheld, it could negatively impact the care of their children, especially with the incoming Trump administration promising to impose restrictions on transgender individuals.

Kristen Chapman explained that dealing with the consequences of a law that restricts abortion forces individuals to adapt to a new way of life where they feel limited in their choices. She left Tennessee with her teenage daughter after the law was enacted, likening the experience to a family going through a natural disaster that alters their sense of security and comfort.

Parents from five different families, along with three of the children, were willing to participate in interviews under the condition of anonymity due to fears of potential backlash and ongoing harassment.

In my opinion, when a child expresses their identity and needs to you, as a parent, it is important to support them in their journey.
