Some families quickly left their homes and withdrew their children from school when Tennessee prohibited gender-transition care for minors. Other families decided to stay, prioritizing medical appointments out of state by reducing their expenses on holidays and gifts.
Some people who have chosen to remain in Tennessee have not completely dismissed the idea of leaving the state at some point in the future.
Families are feeling very anxious as the Supreme Court considers a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are worried that if the ban is upheld, it could make it even harder to access care for their children, especially with the new Trump administration promising to enforce restrictions on transgender individuals.
Kristen Chapman, who relocated from Tennessee with her teenage daughter after the law was enacted, expressed the challenges of constantly having to explain that she did not choose the situation and that there are no favorable choices. She likened the experience to a natural disaster impacting her family, as it alters their sense of normalcy and well-being.
Parents from five additional families, along with three children, agreed to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation and ongoing harassment.
