After Tennessee prohibited gender-transition care for children, some families left quickly, leaving their homes and schools behind. Other families decided to stay, sacrificing holidays and other expenses to travel out of state for medical appointments.
Some people who have chosen to remain in Tennessee are still considering the option of relocating in the future.
Families are feeling extreme pressure as the Supreme Court considers a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are concerned that a decision in support of the ban could make it even harder to provide care for their children, especially with the new Trump administration planning to impose restrictions on transgender individuals.
Kristen Chapman, who relocated from Tennessee with her teenage daughter following the passing of a law, expressed the challenges of constantly having to explain that she did not choose this situation and that there are no ideal choices. She likened the experience to a natural disaster within the family, altering their sense of well-being and identity.
Five families, along with three of their children, agreed to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation and ongoing harassment.
