On Wednesday morning, Penelope Hegseth, the mother of Pete Hegseth, stated that her son has changed since 2018, when she sent an email accusing him of mistreating women and lacking integrity and moral values.
Mrs. Hegseth stated on "Fox & Friends" that Pete has transformed into a new individual, having been redeemed, forgiven, and changed.
"I really hope that today people can understand who Pete is, especially our female senators. I hope that you will listen to him and truly listen to the truth of his words with empathy," she stated. She also mentioned, "He does not mistreat women."
She made an appearance after The New York Times released an email she had written while Mr. Hegseth was going through a difficult divorce from his second wife. In an interview with The Times on Friday, she admitted to not believing what she had said in the email and mentioned that she had apologized to her son in a subsequent email.
Following claims of excessive alcohol consumption and mishandling of nonprofit organizations highlighted in an article in The New Yorker, another incident involving Peter Hegseth has emerged. A woman filed a police complaint alleging that he raped her at a political conference in 2017. Despite an investigation leading to no charges, Hegseth’s lawyer maintains that the encounter was consensual.
The negative consequences of recent events have put Mr. Hegseth’s opportunity to head the Defense Department in the upcoming Trump administration at risk. President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly considering alternative candidates for the position.
