In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican officeholder on Tuesday, flipping the seat in the 2024 House race that was the final one to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Although Adam Gray, the challenger, succeeded in defeating the incumbent, U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat shortly before The A.P. announced the winner, according to his campaign representative, Duane Dichiara.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is both independent and accountable, prioritizing the well-being of the Valley’s residents over political affiliations.

In the recent election, Mr. Gray, who used to serve in the California State Assembly, won in the 13th Congressional District. This outcome was the opposite of what happened in 2022, where Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in that House race.
