A previously elected Democratic official won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley on Tuesday, resulting in a change of power for the 2024 House race. This news was reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House during the next Congress. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before the Associated Press announced the final results, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule.

In a statement made on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is willing to be held accountable for their actions.

Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, won the election in the 13th Congressional District in a turnaround from the results in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin in what was one of the closest House races.
