On Tuesday, a Democrat who used to be a state legislator won against the current Republican representative in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in a change of power for the seat, making it the last House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House with 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats when the next Congress meets.
According to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast, conceded just before The A.P. made their announcement.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced his win before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results indicate that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the well-being of the people in the Valley over party politics.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won in the 13th Congressional District in a turnaround from the 2022 election results. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very slim margin in comparison to other House races.
