In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won over the Republican incumbent in the last House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will have 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats.
Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election where over 210,000 votes were cast, admitted defeat just before The A.P. declared the winner, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, two days before the deadline for California counties to finalize their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over partisan politics.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved victory in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results of the 2022 election. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin, which was the second smallest in any House race at that time.
