A Democrat who used to be a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday in California’s Central Valley. This victory resulted in the flipping of a seat that was the final House race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, won against the current U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still hold a slight majority in the House once the next Congress begins. The Republicans will have 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before the Associated Press declared the results, Mr. Duarte accepted defeat in the election where he was behind by 187 votes out of over 210,000 votes cast. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for Mr. Duarte’s campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days earlier.
In a statement released on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results indicate that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political agendas, emphasizing the need for independence and accountability.
Mr. Gray, a former California State Assembly member, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District in 2022, reversing the results from two years ago when Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in that same district.
