In California’s Central Valley, a Democrat who previously served as a state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, resulting in a seat flip. This race was the final one in the 2024 House election to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives with 220 seats compared to the Democrats’ 215 seats when the next Congress meets.
Before the Associated Press officially declared the outcome of the election, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 total votes, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, which was two days before the deadline for California counties to finalize their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent and accountable, prioritizing the people of the Valley over political partisanship.
Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, won in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. Two years prior, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin in a House race.
