In California’s Central Valley, a Democratic candidate who used to be a state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent on Tuesday, flipping a seat in the House. This race was the final one in 2024 to be determined, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress starts. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Before The Associated Press officially called the election results, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast, conceded according to a statement from his campaign spokesperson, Duane Dichiara.

Before California counties were required to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days prior.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the recent election results show that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the Valley’s residents over political agendas.

Mr. Gray, who used to be a member of the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that overturned the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin, making it one of the closest House races.
