On Tuesday, a Democrat who used to be a state legislator won against the Republican currently in office to gain a seat in California’s Central Valley. This race was the final House election for 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray defeated John Duarte in the election for U.S. Representative, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republican party will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election with over 210,000 votes cast, admitted defeat just before The Associated Press declared the result, according to a spokesperson for his campaign named Duane Dichiara.

Before California counties were mandated to certify their results, Mr. Gray claimed victory on Tuesday, two days prior.

In a statement on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political alliances.

Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a surprising win in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results from 2022. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin, making it one of the closest House races.
