On Tuesday, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican officeholder in California’s Central Valley, flipping a seat that was the final House race to be decided in 2024 as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before the Associated Press made the call, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots, conceded, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced that he had won two days earlier on Tuesday.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political partisanship and is committed to accountability.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won the recent election in the 13th Congressional District, which was a change from the 2022 election results. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte narrowly won in the same district, with one of the smallest margins in any House race.
