In the most recent House race, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent in California’s Central Valley. This victory marked the final House race of 2024 to be officially called, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated John Duarte in the election, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the next Congress starts. There will be 220 Republican seats compared to 215 Democratic seats.
Mr. Duarte accepted defeat in the election after falling behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes cast. This decision was made before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
On Tuesday, Mr. Gray announced that he had won before the deadline for California counties to certify their election results.
Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that is independent, accountable, and prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations.
Mr. Gray, a previous California State Assembly member, won the election in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the outcome from 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in one of the House races.
