In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the Republican incumbent on Tuesday, flipping a seat in the House that was the final race of 2024 to be decided, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray defeated John Duarte in the U.S. Representative race, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Before The A.P. declared the winner, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 votes, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for his campaign.

Mr. Gray announced that he had won on Tuesday, two days before the deadline for California counties to officially confirm their election results.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the recent election results show that the district is in need of leadership that prioritizes the interests of the people in the Valley over political affiliations.

Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved a victory in the 13th Congressional District, which was a turnaround from the results in 2022. In that election, Mr. Duarte had won by a very narrow margin, making it the second-closest House race.
