In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state lawmaker won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, flipping the seat in the last House race of 2024 to be decided. This information was reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent, U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republican Party will still have a slight majority in the House of Representatives when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215 seats.

Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in an election where over 210,000 votes were cast, admitted defeat shortly before The A.P. announced the results, according to Duane Dichiara, a representative for his campaign.

Before California counties were required to certify their results, Mr. Gray claimed victory on Tuesday, two days in advance.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release that the outcome shows the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations and is committed to transparency and responsibility.

Mr. Gray, who previously served in the California State Assembly, achieved a win in the 13th Congressional District that was a turnaround from the election results in 2022. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte narrowly won by a small margin in a House race.
