In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, resulting in a change of party for the seat. This race was the last House race of 2024 to be officially decided, as reported by The Associated Press.
Even though Adam Gray defeated U.S. Representative John Duarte in the election, the Republican party will still have a slight majority in the House when the new Congress starts. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.
Before the Associated Press announced the results, Mr. Duarte, who was behind by 187 votes in a race with over 210,000 ballots cast, admitted defeat. This information was shared by Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Mr. Gray announced his win on Tuesday, two days ahead of the deadline for California counties to confirm their election results.
In a statement made on X, Mr. Gray expressed that the final results show that the district is prepared for leadership that is both independent and accountable, prioritizing the people of the Valley over partisan politics.
Mr. Gray, who used to be part of the California State Assembly, won in the 13th Congressional District in a turnaround from the 2022 election results. Two years ago, Mr. Duarte had won by a very small margin in any House race.
