In California’s Central Valley, a former Democratic state legislator won against the current Republican representative on Tuesday, flipping the seat in the last House race of 2024 to be determined, as reported by The Associated Press.

Even though Adam Gray, the challenger, defeated the incumbent U.S. Representative John Duarte, the Republicans will still have a slight majority in the House when the next Congress meets. The Republicans will hold 220 seats, while the Democrats will have 215.

Before The A.P. officially declared the results, Mr. Duarte accepted defeat in the election where he was behind by 187 votes out of over 210,000 votes cast, according to Duane Dichiara, a spokesperson for his campaign.

Before the deadline for counties in California to certify their results, Mr. Gray announced his victory on Tuesday, two days in advance.

Mr. Gray stated in a press release on X that the district is prepared for leadership that prioritizes the people of the Valley over political affiliations. The final results have confirmed this sentiment.

Mr. Gray, a previous member of the California State Assembly, achieved a victory in the 13th Congressional District, overturning the results of the 2022 election. In the previous election, Mr. Duarte won by a very small margin in any House race.
