Some families quickly left Tennessee after the state banned gender-transition care for children, while others decided to stay and make sacrifices like reducing vacation and holiday spending to travel out of state for doctor appointments.

Some individuals who have chosen to remain in Tennessee are still considering the option of relocating in the future.

Families are feeling immense pressure as the Supreme Court considers a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are worried that if the ban is upheld, it could negatively impact the care their children receive, especially with the incoming Trump administration planning to impose more restrictions on transgender individuals.

Kristen Chapman, who relocated from Tennessee with her teenage daughter after the law was enacted, described the challenges of constantly having to explain that the situation was not her choice and there were no good options. She likened the experience to a natural disaster affecting her family dynamics and sense of well-being.

Parents from five different families, as well as three of the children, were willing to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity. They expressed fears of facing retaliation and ongoing harassment.

In my opinion, when your child confides in you about their identity and needs, it is important as a parent to provide them with support and acceptance.
