According to a spokesperson for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, an individual shot two young children, ages 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday. The authorities believe that the gunman then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose the school as a target due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist religion. Both of the students, who are male, are in a severe condition and are receiving medical care for their critical injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this update during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. This response was prompted by multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter on the premises. Megan McMann, a representative for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter came to the campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was arranged beforehand and appeared to be friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was used as a pretext by the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

The principal heard gunshots and screams right after the meeting finished, according to Sheriff Honea. It was thought that the students were not inside the classroom at the time of the shooting.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the shooter, a man who was of adult age, was incapacitated with what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as stated by the sheriff. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the firearm.
