According to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter targeted two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The gunman then reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist religion. Both victims, who are male students, are currently in a state of extreme critical condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Kory L. Honea, the sheriff of Butte County, during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. The call was in response to reports of an active shooter, according to Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter had planned to meet with the principal on campus to discuss enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that had been arranged beforehand, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was described as friendly, but investigators were still determining if the shooter had used it as a pretense to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. It was assumed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon the arrival of the authorities, they discovered that the shooter, a man of adult age, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was located near the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the gun.
