On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter targeted two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The gunman then passed away from what authorities suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Two male students are currently in a critical condition, receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter made through 911 calls. This information was provided by Megan McMann, a representative from the sheriff’s office.

Initial information indicated that the shooter entered the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. This meeting had been arranged beforehand and was described as friendly. However, authorities are looking into whether the shooter may have used this meeting as a guise to gain access to the school premises.

The principal heard gunshots and screams shortly after the meeting was finished, according to Sheriff Honea. It is believed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement, it was discovered that the shooter, a man of legal age, was incapacitated with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted. A handgun was located in close proximity to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating the source of the gun used by the shooter.
