In a small parochial school in rural California, a shooter targeted two young children in kindergarten, aged 5 and 6, on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities suspect that the shooter specifically chose to target the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventists, a type of Protestant Christian group. Both of the injured students, who are male, are in a very serious condition and are currently receiving treatment for their severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento. This information was shared by Kory L. Honea, the sheriff of Butte County, during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter made through 911 calls. Megan McMann, a representative for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter went to the school to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that had been arranged beforehand, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was friendly, but Sheriff Honea mentioned that authorities are still investigating whether the meeting was a trick by the shooter to gain access to the school campus.

Not long after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It was believed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the shooter, a man who was not a minor, had been injured by a gunshot that appeared to have been self-inflicted, according to the sheriff. A handgun was also found in close proximity to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came to possess the gun.
