An individual shot two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith. The two victims, who are male students, are currently in a very critical state and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter made through 911 calls. This information was shared by Megan McMann, a representative from the sheriff’s office. Oroville is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento.

Initial reports indicated that the gunman went to the school campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was planned in advance and was described as friendly. However, investigators are looking into whether the gunman used this meeting as a way to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting happened.

Upon their arrival, the authorities discovered that the shooter, a grown man, was no longer a threat due to what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was also found near the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter managed to obtain the firearm.
