A shooter attacked two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter then took their own life with a gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the individual who carried out the shooting at the school specifically chose it due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith. Both victims, who are male students, are currently in very serious condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento, according to Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea, who made the statement during a press conference on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. This was in response to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter situation. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.
Initial information indicated that the shooter arrived at the school campus to speak with the principal about possibly enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been scheduled in advance and was described as being friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the shooter may have used the meeting as a way to gain access to the school grounds under false pretenses.
Not long after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunfire and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.
Upon the arrival of the authorities, they discovered that the gunman, who was an adult male, appeared to have shot himself with a handgun. The authorities also found a handgun near the gunman’s body. They are currently investigating how the gunman came to possess the gun.
