According to a spokesman from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter targeted two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday. The shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school specifically because it is associated with the Seventh-day Adventist religion, which is a Protestant Christian group. Two male students from the school are currently in severe condition with very serious injuries, receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to reports of an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter went to the campus to meet the principal and talk about enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that had been planned in advance, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was described as friendly, but investigators are still determining if the shooter had ulterior motives for being on school property.

Not long after the meeting concluded, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It is believed that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, officials discovered that the gunman, a man, had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was no longer a threat. A handgun was located near his body. The authorities are currently investigating how the gunman acquired the weapon.
