An individual shot two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the authorities, the school was chosen by the gunman due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist denomination of Christianity. The two injured students, both male, are in a very critical condition and are currently receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Kory L. Honea, the sheriff of Butte County, during a news conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, which is approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. The sheriff’s office spokesperson, Megan McMann, stated that they had received 911 calls reporting an active shooter on the school premises.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the campus to talk with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that had been planned in advance, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was described as friendly, but investigators are still looking into whether the shooter may have used it as a way to gain access to the school grounds under false pretenses.

The principal heard gunshots and screams right after the meeting ended, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought the students were not in the classroom when the shooting happened.

Upon the arrival of the authorities, they discovered that the shooter, a grown man, was found on the ground with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted, as stated by the sheriff. A gun was also discovered close to the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came to possess the gun.
