According to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, a shooter targeted two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The gunman then reportedly took his own life with a gunshot wound.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Both victims, both male students, are currently in a severe condition and are receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials went to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter made through 911 calls. The school is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter had planned to meet with the principal at the school to discuss enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was scheduled in advance and appeared to be friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the shooter used the meeting as a cover to gain access to the school premises.

Not long after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. It was thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the gunman, a grown man, was deceased from a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted. A handgun was located close to the gunman’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the gunman acquired the gun.
