A shooter targeted two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesman from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, a Protestant Christian group. Two male students are currently in a very critical condition with severe injuries, receiving treatment at a trauma center in the Sacramento region, as stated by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, which is approximately 60 miles away from Sacramento. The calls to 911 reported an active shooter situation, stated Megan McMann, a representative of the sheriff’s office.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived at the campus with the intention of meeting the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned in advance and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the shooter used the meeting as a disguise to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting was over, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. It was thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival of the authorities, they discovered that the shooter, a man who was of adult age, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted, as stated by the sheriff. A handgun was located close to the man’s body. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the shooter acquired the firearm.
