An individual shot two young students, ages 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a branch of Protestant Christianity. Both victims, who are male students, are in a severe condition and are currently receiving treatment for their critical injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press briefing held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to 911 calls reporting an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, confirmed the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter had entered the campus with the intention of meeting with the principal to talk about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned in advance and appeared to be friendly. However, authorities were investigating whether the shooter had used the meeting as a way to gain access to the school grounds under false pretenses.

Not long after the meeting was over, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought the students were outside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that the gunman, a man who was of legal age, was incapacitated due to what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was discovered in close proximity to the gunman’s body. Authorities are currently investigating how the gunman came into possession of the firearm.
