On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter targeted two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect that the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a representative from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventist religion. Both victims, who are male students, are in critical condition and receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in Sacramento. Sheriff Kory L. Honea of Butte County provided this information during a press briefing on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials were called to Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, which is located approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. The reason for the call was reports of an active shooter, according to Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter had entered the campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student, in a meeting that had been arranged beforehand, according to Sheriff Honea. The meeting was friendly, but investigators were still looking into whether the shooter had used it as a trick to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and people screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting happened.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the gunman, a grown man, was deceased from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was located close to the gunman’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the gunman came into possession of the firearm.
