A shooter fired at two young students, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities believe the shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter chose to attack the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventists, a Protestant Christian group. Two male students are currently in a critical condition and are receiving treatment for severe injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento area. Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea provided this information during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement arrived at Feather River Adventist school in Oroville, California, following reports of an active shooter. The sheriff’s office spokesperson, Megan McMann, confirmed that they were responding to 911 calls regarding the incident.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter had arrived at the school to have a meeting with the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been planned in advance and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was a ploy by the shooter to gain access to the school.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screaming, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.

Upon arrival, officials discovered that the gunman, a man who was of legal age, was found deceased from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was located near the gunman’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the gunman came into possession of the weapon.
