On Wednesday afternoon, a person with a gun shot two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities think that the shooter then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This information was shared by a representative from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement officials suspect that the shooter specifically chose the school due to its connection to the Seventh-day Adventist faith, a Protestant Christian group. Both of the victims, who are male students, are in a very severe condition and are currently receiving treatment for their serious injuries at a trauma center in the Sacramento region. This information was shared by Butte County Sheriff, Kory L. Honea, during a press conference held on Wednesday evening.
Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. This was in response to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter. Megan McMann, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.
Initial reports indicated that the shooter entered the campus to speak with the principal about potentially enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting was planned in advance and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the shooter used the meeting as a cover to gain access to the school.
Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunfire and screams coming from outside. Sheriff Honea stated that he thought the students were not in the classroom when the shooting occurred.
Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the shooter, a man who was of legal age, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted. A handgun was also found close to the man’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came into possession of the gun.
