On Wednesday afternoon, a shooter attacked two young children, aged 5 and 6, at a small religious school in rural California. The authorities suspect that the shooter then took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokesperson from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials think that the shooter chose to target the school due to its connection with the Seventh-day Adventists, a Protestant Christian group. Both victims, who are male students, are in severe condition and are receiving medical care for critical injuries at a trauma center near Sacramento. This was shared by Butte County Sheriff Kory L. Honea during a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Around 1:10 p.m., law enforcement officials arrived at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, California, approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento, in response to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter. Megan McMann, a representative for the sheriff’s office, provided this information.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter arrived on campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a family member as a student. The meeting had been scheduled in advance and was described as friendly. However, authorities are investigating whether the meeting was a pretense for the shooter to gain access to the school grounds.

Right after the meeting finished, the principal heard gunshots and screams, according to Sheriff Honea. He thought that the students were not in the classroom when the shooting happened.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the shooter, a man who is of legal age, was found deceased with a gunshot wound that seemed to be self-inflicted, according to the sheriff. A handgun was also located near the shooter’s body. The authorities are currently investigating how the shooter came to possess the firearm.
