Some families left Tennessee promptly after the state banned gender-transition care for children, while others decided to stay and made sacrifices such as cutting back on expenses to travel out of state for medical appointments.
Some residents who have chosen to remain in Tennessee are still considering the option of moving away at some point in the future.
Families are feeling immense pressure as the Supreme Court reviews a challenge to a Tennessee law. They are concerned that a decision in support of the ban could worsen the situation for their children, especially with the new Trump administration planning to impose restrictions on transgender individuals.
Kristen Chapman, who moved away from Tennessee with her teenage daughter after the law was implemented, described the experience as having to adapt to a new way of life where she constantly has to explain that she didn’t choose the situation and there are no good choices. She likened it to a natural disaster affecting her family, altering their sense of normalcy and comfort.
Five families’ parents and three children agreed to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation and ongoing harassment.
