Some families left quickly after Tennessee prohibited gender-transition care for their children, while others stayed behind and made sacrifices like cutting back on expenses to travel out of state for doctor appointments.
Some individuals who have chosen to remain in Tennessee have not completely dismissed the idea of leaving the state at some point in the future.
Families are feeling extreme pressure as the Supreme Court listens to arguments about a challenge to the Tennessee law. They are worried that a decision supporting the ban could put their children’s care at risk, especially with the Trump administration planning to impose more restrictions on transgender individuals.
Kristen Chapman, who relocated from Tennessee with her teenage daughter following the passing of a new law, expressed the challenge of constantly having to explain that she did not choose the situation and there are no favorable choices available. She likened the experience to a natural disaster impacting her family, causing a shift in her demeanor and sense of comfort.
Parents from five different families, along with three of the children, were willing to participate in interviews on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation and ongoing harassment.
